Post by Bungle Sun May 10, 2009 3:20 pm

driving back from vanwest today i lost my brakes

peddle was going straight to the floor

stopped at a service station to find my back breaks smoking and wheels very hot

rolled the van backwards and forwards and it rolled freely with no grinding noises

let things cool off and tried again and the rest of the trip home was fine and wheels were cool once home

van didn't seem to be going any slower and i could lose the T4 behind on hills

any ideas

Well if it is just the rears I would say to check the adjustment of the shoes. You didn't do my normal trick and leave the handbrake on a few clicks?

I suppose they can do, I have never had one stick. I guess the only way you are going to know what is going on is to get the rear drums off and have a look.

That is something we should do, but it is having a place to do it. One thing I would look at doing once you have sorted what ever it is, is replace all the brake fluid.

sounds like the same as paul (baycrazy from flubber dubbers - the one your mrs worked with bungle) had with his bay on the cvwoc cruise, i was behind him and could see smoke coming out from the brakes so he stopped and had a quick look, i think he said they were just over adjusted. could just be the same problem.

Could I suggest that future meets occur on a Sunday. Regrettably I have to work on a Saturday so cannot make it. However, I would be more than willing to come along on a Sunday, my day off, to add my expertise to the mix. Very Happy

Yeah, you've done some serious work on your brakes recently. It is probable that you adjusted your rear brakes a little too tightly. so when they have to work they get hot and expand thus causing the brakes to bind get hot and expand further. So I would check the adjustment of your rear brakes. Above all else I would replace your brake fluid, as from your description of the original problem the brake fluid in your rear brakes has been seriously heated. As brake fluid is hygroscopic (absorbs water), so when it gets hot the water boils, turns to steam and that is what causes your brake pedal to go to the floor and recover when everything cools down.
